Q: What is DeviceLock® Me?

A: DeviceLock® Me gives network administrators control over which users can access what removable devices (floppies, Magneto-Optical disks, CD-ROMs, ZIPs, etc.) on a local computer. Once DeviceLock® Me is installed, administrators can control access to floppies, CD-ROMs or any other device, depending on the time of day and day of the week. DeviceLock® Me enhances access control for Windows System Administrators and helps control removable disk usage. It can protect network and local computers against viruses, trojans and other malicious programs often injected from removable disks. Network administrators can also use DeviceLock® Me to flush a storage device's buffers. Remote control is also available. This supports Windows 95/98/Me and comes with an automatic install and uninstall program.
DeviceLock® Me has the same functionality as other SmartLine's well known product DeviceLock® for Windows NT/2000/XP but DeviceLock® Me was designed specially for Windows 95/98 and Windows Me.

Q: What limitations are there in an unregistered version?

A: There are no functional limitations for an unregistered version and you may use DeviceLock® Me (during the evaluation period) as a fully registered program but only on one computer. An unregistered version of DeviceLock® Me displays nag screens.

Q: What is the easiest way to register DeviceLock® Me?

Q: Can I be sent an invoice when I purchase DeviceLock® Me?

A: Yes. Use our online forms at http://www.protect-me.com/dlme/register.html. Select a payment method (order by fax, toll-free phone, bank transfer, etc.), then ask for an invoice.

Q: Is it safe to use my credit card on the internet?

A: Yes. All our registrations use SECURE protocols. It is impossible for a third party to intercept your credit card information. We also offer alternative ordering methods (such as order by fax, toll-free phone, bank transfer, etc.).

Q: I bought the Single license of DeviceLock® Me. Could I install DeviceLock® Me on all the computers in my network?

A: You may install DeviceLock® Me Service on only a single computer but DeviceLock® Me Manager can be installed on any number of your computers. The Single license gives you the right to use DeviceLock® Me on one computer so you are able to control access on only one computer. If you wish to use DeviceLock® Me on several computers, you need to purchase the appropriate number of Single licenses.

For example, if you wish to control access on:

  • one computer - you need to purchase one Single license ($35);

  • two computers - you need to purchase two Single licenses ($70);

  • more than 2000 computers - please contact us directly for a quote.

Q: What is the difference between Site and World licenses?

A: The one Site/Domain license lets you install DeviceLock® Me Service on all the computers in ONLY one domain or network group with 200 or less computers. If you wish to install DeviceLock® Me Service on up to 2000 computers in all your domains within the one geographical location, you should purchase the World/Corporate license. Please contact us directly for a quote if the DeviceLock® Me Service is to be installed on more than 2000 computers.

Q: I bought a license for DeviceLock® Me. Do I need to buy another license each time DeviceLock® Me is upgraded or a newer version is released?

A: No. When you purchase a license (any kind) for DeviceLock® Me, you automatically purchase all future releases and updates that will be released within 1 year from the date of purchase. It means that during one year you can download and install the latest versions of the software from our site, and the license keyfile that you received from us will work with the latest product version.

If you don't want to purchase an upgrade, you can use the program forever; it will never expire, but you won't be able to use the latest version.

Q: Can I install DeviceLock® Me under Windows 2000/NT?

A: You can install DeviceLock® Me Manager on a Windows 2000/NT machine to manage remotely the DeviceLock® Me Service on a Windows 9x/Me computers. If you want to control access to devices on Windows 2000/NT, you should look at DeviceLock®.

Q: Is it possible to install DeviceLock® Me automatically (without any user intervention)?

A: Yes. Launch DeviceLock® Me setup with the /s parameter to install DeviceLock® Me without user intervention. This provides an install that can be used from within a batch file.
There is a special configuration file for silent setup: setup.ini. With this file, you can customize the DeviceLock® Me installation parameters. For example:

  1. "Install" parameters:

    • Service - DeviceLock® Me Service and its related files will be installed

    • Manager - DeviceLock® Me Manager and its related files will be installed

    • Documents - documentation (readme.txt, register.txt) will be installed

    • To specify a destination directory for DeviceLock Me, you can supply the parameter InstallDir

    • If you have the registration key-file for DeviceLock® Me, you can specify a directory with this file in the parameter RegFileDir

  2. "Misc" parameters:

    • Run - this parameter is used to launch an application or execute a batch file after a successful install.

Q: Is it possible to install DeviceLock® Me using Systems Management Server (SMS)?

A: Yes. You can use the package definition files (dlme.pdf for SMS version 1.x and dlme.sms for SMS version 2.0 and later) supplied with DeviceLock® Me, located in the dlme.zip file.

Q: DeviceLock® Me Service stopped a few seconds after launch or it didn't launch. What's wrong?

A: There are a few possible reasons. An error may have occured during the processing of the DeviceLock® Me Service launch. Or DeviceLock® Me can't be launched because you are attempting to use an unregistered copy in your network. Or you don't have enough licenses to launch another copy of DeviceLock® Me Service.
In any case, you can get more information from the dlmeserv.err file, located in your Windows/System directory.

Q: Is it possible to manage DeviceLock® Me remotely?

A: Yes. You can use DeviceLock® Me Manager. Just select a computer that has the installed DeviceLock® Me Service.

Q: Is it possible to manage DeviceLock® Me from Windows 2000/NT?

A: Yes. Use DeviceLock® Me Manager to manage DeviceLock® Me from a Windows 2000/NT machine.

Q: How can I simultaneously assign a group of users to a few devices?

A: Select a few devices from the list (using CTRL or SHIFT), press the Permissions button and then choose the users.
In addition, DeviceLock® Me provides with a very powerful function (Batch Permissions) that helps to assign permissions to devices on a few computers simultaneously. An administrator can very quickly set permissions for all computers in the network.
